Ragtime The Musical Concert Fundraiser Saturday, August 13 at 7:30pm Sunday, August 14 at 2:00pm A concert-musical fundraiser presenting staged readings from an American Classic, in partnership with the Central Florida Community Arts. RAGTIME is not only a powerful portrait of life in turn-of-the-century America, but a relevant tale for today. Based on E.L. Doctorow's distinguished novel, the musical intertwines the stories of three extraordinary families, as they confront history's timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and what it means to live in America. The Tony-winning score by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty is just as diverse as the melting pot of America itself. It draws upon many musical styles from the ragtime rhythms of Harlem and Tin Pan Alley to the klezmer of the Lower East Side, from bold brass band marches to delicate waltzes, from up-tempo banjo tunes to period parlor songs and expansive anthems. |

The Nerd November 11, 12, 13 & 18, 19, 20 Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30pm Sundays at 2:00pm Terre Haute, Indiana. Now an aspiring architect, Willum Cubbert has often told his friends about the debt he owes to Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved has life in Vietnam. He has written to Rick to say that, as long as he is alive, "you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you" - so Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly on the night of his 34th birthday party. But his delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless "nerd" - a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence and less tact. After just one week, Rick has almost single-handedly destroyed Willum's career, his life and his sanity. Incident piles upon uproarious incident, until the normally placid Willum finds himself contemplating violence - a dire development which, happily, is staved off by the surprise ending of the play. |
